Getting Started with Wakeboarding: Nobody’s a Natural
23rd July 2026 Michal Santoris
If you enjoy watching wakeboarders soar over the water, perhaps the same thought has crossed your mind as it has for thousands of people before you: ‘It looks amazing, but it’s probably not for me.’ The opposite is true, however, because at first glance, wakeboarding looks much more challenging than it actually is. Your first attempts probably won’t be anything to write home about, but you’ll definitely have loads of fun with an extra dose of dopamine. And the next day, you’ll have a pleasant case of muscle soreness. In your arms, legs… basically everywhere.

There’s something about wakeboarding that’s hard to put into words. It combines speed, freedom, progress and a sense of community in a way that will captivate you after your first successful ride and never let you go. And because the hardest part is getting started, we’ll give you a little nudge into the water to make sure you’re ready to go. Both mentally and in terms of equipment.
First Steps in Wakeboarding
Before you start thinking about your first jump, spin or stylish Instagram photo, you need to master the absolute basics. The good news is that getting started in the world of wakeboarding is easier today than ever before. Most modern wakeparks have their own hire shops, or you might come across test equipment from SNOWBOARD ZEZULA. Of course, the parks also have instructors and cableways designed for complete beginners. So you don’t need your own board, years of experience or the fitness of a professional athlete for your first ride.
The most important thing is to learn how to get off to a good start from the water, maintain a stable stance and get a feel for how the board moves across the surface, as well as mastering the correct grip on the handle and managing your centre of gravity properly. Does that sound simple? It basically is. Most beginners manage to cover their first few metres without falling after just a few attempts, and experience that moment when everything clicks into place on their very first day. The initial fear in their eyes turns to fun, and someone who just came to give wakeboarding a go becomes a new fan.
“We know that buying wakeboarding kit is no small investment, and every rider’s preferences are very personal. That’s why we’re touring Czech wakeparks all summer long with our TEST THE BEST test centre, where you can come and try out the kit for free or get advice on choosing the kit that’s really right for you.”
–Kryštof, marketing SNOWBOARD ZEZULA
And once you’ve tried it all out and want to take up the sport more regularly, it’s time to choose and buy your own kit.

How to Choose Your First Wakeboard
When it comes to choosing their first wakeboard, many beginners initially focus on the colour of the board, the design, or the model they’ve seen a professional riding. In reality, however, there are far more important factors to consider, namely the dimensions, your preferred riding style and the camber of the wakeboard. The good news is that with your first wakeboard, you’re not looking for perfection; what you need most is a board that will forgive mistakes and help you build confidence on the water.

For complete beginners, all-round models with predictable handling and greater stability are the ideal choice. The right size is determined primarily by your weight, so it’s always worth following the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you plan to ride mainly on a cable lift, opt for a board designed for cable wakeboarding, which handles riding in a wakepark and contact with features better. Behind the boat, boards with fins are suitable for beginners, as they provide better stability on the water.
The type of base and edges are further factors that do affect how the wakeboard behaves on the water, but for beginners these are details that needn’t be over-analysed—it’s much more important to choose the right board size and comfortable bindings.
“If you’re looking for tried-and-tested gear for your first rides, the Hyperlite Union wakeboard is one of the best choices for beginners. This versatile board offers balanced manoeuvrability, confidence and a smooth transition to more advanced riding techniques. When it comes to bindings, I recommend the most comfortable on the market and a true legend – the Ronix One, which is synonymous with comfort, control and durability.”
–Dominik, Store Manager at SNOWBOARD ZEZULA

How to Choose Your First Wakeboard Bindings
Choosing your first bindings is much like choosing the board itself. You can put technical specifications and stiffness to one side for now – the most important thing is that the bindings are comfortable, hold your foot securely and give you a feeling of confidence. If they’re too tight or your foot slips around in them, something’s not right.

Open-toe models offer a wider range of sizes, making them ideal, for example, if you share your kit with friends or siblings. Closed-toe bindings, on the other hand, hug the foot more snugly, providing greater control and, in most cases, greater comfort whilst riding. This is precisely why most regular riders opt for them.
Just as with snowboards, there are softer and stiffer models, but beginners won’t even notice the differences between them at first. It’s much more important to choose the right size and model, one in which you’ll feel at ease right from your very first time out on the water.
“If you’re just starting out with wakeboarding, go for a board with grooves on the base. They help you hold your line better, improve stability whilst riding and during landings, and are more forgiving of mistakes. Smooth bases without pronounced grooves will be appreciated more by advanced riders who are looking for a freer and more playful ride across the water and over features.”

Safety First
Let’s face it: falling into the water is a natural part of wakeboarding, and sooner or later, no one can avoid it. The good news is that most falls end with nothing more than a wet smile and the desire to give it another go. Even so, it’s not worth underestimating the importance of safety.

The key is always to wear a good-quality protective vest, and ideally a helmet too, especially if you’re planning to ride in a wakepark or gradually try your hand at obstacles. It’s just as important to know the rules of the specific venue, follow the instructions of the staff, and not attempt anything you don’t yet feel confident doing. Although wakeboarding and speed go hand in hand, a slower and more natural approach is better for improving your skills, especially when you’re just starting out.
“When wakeboarding, we don’t wear a life jacket, but a so-called impact vest, which protects the torso, particularly the ribs and hips. These vests must fit snugly against the body and must not restrict movement. We recommend Follow vests, which are among the best on the market for wakeboarding vests.”
